| I’m a 44 year old gay man living in Wollongong which is just south of Sydney Australia. My background is mainly in theatre and specifically masks work but I have had a professional carer as a photographer for a street magazine and a jewellery designer in the 80’s I have studied visual arts in various universities and institutions where I mainly worked in pen ad ink or other drawing media, I made a conscious decision to focus on the male nude as a way of expressing myself. This decision had nothing to do with being gay although it did influence the decision, but I was more concerned that at the time (1981) nude male images were either gay porn or used for comic effect, the male nude which was once the basis for all figurative art was almost gone. Being male I knew the body because I had one and although I am not in any way the same shape as my models the topography is the same. I hope to explore my sexuality through my work and see what forms I can express, I also have an interest in what men define them selves as and do we need to be masculine to feel we are male. I prefer ordinary male bodies as opposed to the well defines sculpted form, my interest is not in perfection but in the humanity of the sitter. |
